Item 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
Item 5: Walking through a crowd
Item 6: Sit and down on command - staying in place
Item 7: Coming when called
Item 8: Reaction to another dog
Item 9: Reaction to distraction
Item 10: Supervised separation

Why do it?

Earning the CGC award will ensure that your dog is a well-respected member of your community. The Canine Good Citizen award is one of the first AKC certificates your dog can own and CGC provides an excellent foundation for all other training.

Some therapy dog groups require the CGC as a prerequisite for therapy work, there are CGC neighborhoods and hiking trails, and a number of state legislatures have endorsed the CGC concept. Providing a CGC certificate to prospective landlords has helped many people obtain living space with their dogs.

Canine Good Citizen Training is fun and useful. You'll find that training for the CGC award will help you establish a closer bond with your dog.

How can you get your dog get tested and obtain a CGC certificate from the AKC?

Beverly Ulbrich, the owner and founder of The Pooch Coach LLC, is a AKC certified evaluator and can test your dog for CGC compliance.

Need training before you can pass the test?

Beverly is an experienced and highly recommended trainer who can help you if you're just starting out with a new puppy, or need help with some poor habits of an older friend.

She specializes in private, personalized training and behavior problem solving through reinforcement and shaping. Along with preparing you to pass the CGC test, she can help you with basic commands through advanced obedience training; puppy & house training; behavior problems; aggression issues; and off-leash training.
